Rail Crossing App — Real-Time Railway Gate Status
Mobile App Development
Project Overview
Railway level crossings are a routine but often uncertain part of daily commuting — drivers and pedestrians approaching a crossing typically have no way to know in advance whether the gate is open or closed, leading to unnecessary waiting or last-minute route decisions.
These two railway level crossings — Kotegate and Sankhla — sit within the city and effectively divide it into two parts. When the gates are closed, the impact goes far beyond an ordinary traffic delay. Daily movement can come to a standstill, commuters are forced to wait or search for alternate routes, ambulances may be unable to cross in time, and even funeral processions carrying a deceased person can be delayed at the closed gates.
This engagement focused on building a real-time railway gate status application for these two critical crossings. By providing live visibility into whether each gate is open or closed — synchronized directly with train schedules — the solution was designed to help residents make better route decisions in advance, reduce avoidable waiting, and support more reliable movement across two of the city's most important crossing points.
The Challenge
Residents approaching the Kotegate and Sankhla railway crossings had no reliable way to know whether the gates were open or closed before reaching them. Because these crossings connect two heavily interdependent parts of the city, an unexpected closure could mean far more than routine waiting — traffic could build rapidly, emergency vehicles could be delayed, and people could be forced into last-minute diversions.
The objective was therefore to provide accurate, real-time visibility into the status of both railway gates, using train schedules as the primary information source — while also supporting manual updates for cases where actual train movement or gate operation differed from the expected schedule. This would allow commuters to make informed route decisions before reaching the crossing and reduce avoidable disruption.
The Solution
Neologicx developed a real-time rail crossing status app with the following core capabilities:
- Live crossing status (open/closed) for the Kotegate and Sankhla crossings, synced with train schedules
- Admin override functionality, allowing crossing status to be manually updated for last-minute schedule changes
- A simple, verification-based interface, giving users quick access to accurate status without unnecessary complexity
The app displays crossing status clearly through a color-coded interface — red for closed, green for open — along with location context and estimated wait time.
What We Delivered
Unique real-time railway gate status app for Kotegate and Sankhla crossings
Live updates synced with train schedules
Admin override for last-minute changes
Simple interface post mobile verification
Results & Outcome
A connected complaint management workflow that captures customer issues across multiple channels — including WhatsApp chatbot automation and social media platforms — and automatically registers them within a centralized system. This gives the internal team structured visibility into complaint status, severity, ownership and follow-up, while reducing manual entry and helping ensure that customer issues from different channels are tracked through a consistent resolution process.
Project FAQs
